CARE & MAINTENANCE
Many of the instruments made by Wildwood instruments have an oil finish. This is to enhance their natural feel and appearance whilst protecting them from the elements. They do need to be re-oiled every once in a while to maintain that protective layer. It depends on how much you play and where you store your instrument as to how often you need to oil it. Tapping sticks for instance, if played regularly may never need oiling as the oils from your hands should be enough . However, most of the instruments can be oiled once a year to keep them in top form. More regular oiling may be required depending on the environmental conditions that the instrument is exposed to. I use Tung oil, but most oils are fine to use on these instruments. I DO NOT recommend Linseed oil as this will, over time turn the beautiful reddish colour of Jarrah black!
On the Pan-pipes I use an oil that is food safe (non toxic) as this instrument is put to the mouth when played.
The necks of the stringed instruments need to be oiled as well. It is best to clean it down with a Turpentine moistened cloth first. Allow it to dry then apply the oil. (follow the Oiling instructions of your particular oil)
The bodies of the stringed instruments have been varnished. They can be cleaned with a standard guitar polish. I use Dunlop Fomulae 65.
If you are unsure you can contact Wildwood Instruments or bring it in and allow me to do it for you.
